Humanism

Understanding Humanism

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life based on a profound respect for human dignity and the conviction that human beings are ultimately accountable to themselves and to society for their actions. It is a secular worldview that affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical and meaningful lives.

Many people are Humanist without even knowing it. Humanists are motivated by ethics, compassion, and fairness, and guided by reason and scientific inquiry. We are inspired by history, art, music, literature, and the beauty of the natural world.

The Humanist vision is a fair and equal society guided by critical thinking and compassion.  By utilizing free inquiry, the power of science and creative imagination, Humanists have confidence that we have the means to solve the problems that confront us all.

Humanist ceremonies are non-religious ceremonies, tailored to the beliefs and values of the individuals involved.
Humanist ceremonies are conducted by trained and accredited humanist officiants who work with individuals to create a personalized ceremony that reflects their unique circumstances and preferences.
Humanist ceremonies often include elements such as readings, music, and personal reflections, and may take place in a variety of settings, including the outdoors or in a private home.
Humanist ceremonies may include symbolic gestures such as the lighting of candles or the planting of a tree to mark the occasion.
Humanist ceremonies can be customized to include elements of different cultures to reflect the diverse backgrounds of the individuals involved.
Humanist ceremonies are inclusive and respectful of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, cultural heritage, faith, or ethnicity.

Humanism and Your Celebration

"People – even the most ardently secular – still want, need , and  enjoy structured moments of reflection, recognition and consecration.  At such time - births, weddings, funerals and so forth - they want to stop and take in the moment, feel the significance, relish the beauty and poignancy. They want to hear words of inspiration, guidance or comfort."  ~ Marc Schaus, Beyond Secular, 2019

Chief among our values is this: to uphold honesty, reason, critical thinking and cooperation, in every facet of human interdependence.  The fact that you are considering a Humanist Officiant suggests that you feel this way too.
